The UJA-Federation of New York is a major Jewish philanthropic organization that funds a wide range of programs in Israel and around the world. The rabbis’ letter urged the group to use its influence to pressure the Israeli government to prioritize the release of the hostages and push for a ceasefire deal with Hamas.
“We are deeply troubled by the absence of a public statement from the UJA-Federation of New York,” the letter said. “We believe that your voice can make a difference in this critical moment.”
The rabbis also called on the UJA-Federation to support efforts to address the underlying causes of the conflict, including the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the blockade of Gaza.
In response to the letter, a spokesperson for the UJA-Federation said the organization is “deeply concerned about the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza” and is “working to support humanitarian efforts to help those affected by the conflict.” The spokesperson did not specifically address the rabbis’ demand for a public statement supporting a ceasefire deal.
The rabbis’ letter is the latest sign of growing frustration within the American Jewish community over the Israeli government’s handling of the conflict with Hamas. It remains to be seen whether the UJA-Federation will heed their call for action.
