We are now in the month of Elul, approaching the end of the year. The pain and suffering of those who have lost loved ones is indescribable. This nation has endured so much.
Recently, I walked with hundreds of people behind Hirsh Goldberg-Polin’s coffin. The sight was unforgettable. As we made our way to the burial spot, the silence was palpable. We all held onto hope until the very end, praying for their safe return. The abrupt loss of six beautiful souls left us all in shock.
This past year has been filled with sorrow and tragedy. Despite our prayers and efforts, we were unable to bring Hersh home alive.
As we approach the end of this challenging year, it is a time for reflection, connection, and repentance. Elul is a month of preparation for the upcoming High Holy Days. We stand before the Almighty in judgment, seeking forgiveness and redemption.
Elul is a time when Hashem is said to be closer to us, making Himself accessible for repentance and mercy. This past year has tested us as a nation, but it has also brought us closer together.
As we await the redemption, we reflect on the hardships endured and the unity that has emerged. We long for the day when we can worship in the Third Temple in Jerusalem, united as one people under G-d.
May this month be a time of cleansing and renewal as we prepare for Rosh Hashana, seeking mercy and redemption from the Almighty. Amen.
