Assistant Bishop Timotei of Prahova delivered a speech on Tuesday evening at the “Holy Archangel Michael” Church in Limassol, Cyprus, addressing the faithful.
During his talk, the Romanian hierarch discussed the history of monasticism and its significance for both the Church and society, focusing particularly on Romanian monasticism.
He emphasized, “The presence of monastics is essential for the fullness of the Church, embodying its core values. Monks contribute through prayer, silence, preaching, conducting religious services, chanting, and serving as examples of obedience.”
Bishop Timotei also highlighted the challenges faced by monastics in modern society and the various temptations they encounter, noting that those who persevere become true role models.
Legacy of Romanian Monasticism
Reflecting on the history of monasticism, Bishop Timotei mentioned the early monks as well as the founders of monastic life in Romania, such as St. Nicodemus of Tismana and St. Paisius of Neamț.
He remarked that Romanian monasticism has experienced periods of spiritual flourishing as well as challenges, including population movements, invasions, and attempts to weaken the Orthodox faith.
The hierarch praised the efforts of the founders, noting that Romanian monasteries rivaled those on Mount Athos in beauty.
Orthodox Elders during Communist Rule
Bishop Timotei also recalled the influential elders who lived under the communist regime, providing spiritual guidance and support to believers when religious practices were restricted.
He shared stories of devotees walking long distances to seek advice from these elders, underscoring the profound impact they had on the faithful.
The Assistant Bishop urged priests to emphasize the sanctity of monastic sites and the importance of respectful behavior in churches as places of encountering God.
