Hapoel Jerusalem F.C., a soccer club in Israel’s capital, has introduced a new jersey in memory of their devoted fan Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who tragically lost his life while in captivity in Gaza by Hamas.
The jersey, to be worn in their upcoming games, features Goldberg-Polin’s image on the front, surrounded by the phrases “May your memory be a revolution” and “a child of light, love and peace” in Hebrew. These words were inspired by the eulogy given by Jon Polin, Goldberg-Polin’s father, at his recent funeral in Jerusalem.
Goldberg-Polin, aged 23, was among the six hostages found dead by Israeli troops in Gaza, victims of Hamas’ attack. He was taken captive during the Nova music festival on Oct. 7.
Originally from California, Goldberg-Polin became a devoted Hapoel fan after moving to Israel as a child. He was a regular presence in the stands, known for leading chants shirtless, and was a member of the Malha Brigade, the club’s official fan club.
Hapoel Jerusalem, founded in 1926 as part of Israel’s labor movement and with a left-leaning ideology, resonated with Goldberg-Polin. His mother once described the club as “a social justice club that happened to have been attached to a soccer team.”
Following Goldberg-Polin’s capture, Hapoel actively campaigned for his release, using social media to raise awareness and displaying his image at games. The team also covered his funeral live.
Prior to a recent game, Goldberg-Polin’s parents, prominent advocates for the hostages’ release, thanked Hapoel fans in a video message.
Now, the team will proudly wear the jersey honoring their beloved fan. Currently in 10th place in the Israeli Premier League, Hapoel Jerusalem will face Hapoel Haifa on Sept. 14.
