The Patriarchate of Jerusalem strongly condemns the passing of Bill 8371 by the Ukrainian Parliament, which effectively abolishes the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
In a statement released, the Patriarchate urges the Ukrainian Parliament to reconsider and revoke this law “for the benefit of all believers in Ukraine.
It acknowledges the existing deep divisions “in this conflict” without explicitly mentioning the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory that triggered the war in February 2022.
The Patriarchate emphasizes its commitment to its spiritual mission of dialogue and reconciliation through fraternal discussions as the only path to achieving lasting peace among the warring factions and unity within the Church.

Despite our many differences, we are one body. These words from Saint Paul in his First Letter to the Corinthians serve as a simple yet powerful reminder of the Church’s sacred calling for unity. In this same spirit, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, along with several other Patriarchs and Church leaders, denounces the recent legislation passed by the Ukrainian Parliament on August 20th, which prohibits the worship in UOC-MP churches. Such a sweeping measure against numerous faithful individuals does not foster unity or peace. We must not weaponize religious practices, and all individuals should be allowed to worship according to their conscience. We urge the Ukrainian Parliament to reconsider and repeal this law for the well-being of all people of faith in Ukraine.
Our hearts go out to those who have suffered, been displaced, or lost their lives in the ongoing conflict. However, we must not allow this pain to lead to further schisms among the faithful or the unjust criminalization of innocent individuals based on their religious beliefs. As we have consistently stated since the beginning of this conflict, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem acknowledges the complexities and divisions present in this situation and is dedicated to the spiritual mission of fostering dialogue and reconciliation through fraternal discussions. We believe this is the only path to achieving lasting peace among the warring factions and true unity within the Church. Once again, we extend the hand of brotherhood to Christians across the Orthodox Church, hoping to end the suffering and promote healing and unity within our cherished Orthodox Church.
