Dear Hierarchs and Beloved Children,
It has been 35 years since the Ecumenical Patriarchate designated September 1 as a day of prayer for the protection of the natural environment. Today, our focus on climate change has escalated into a planetary emergency, despite the efforts of various groups and individuals. We must undergo a significant shift in our collective mindset to address the root causes of this crisis.
We believe that religious institutions, including churches, can contribute greatly to this necessary transformation. By recognizing the sacredness of all life and the interconnectedness of humanity and nature, we can move towards a more sustainable future. Our faith teaches us to value both humanity and creation, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of the natural world.
We continue to advocate for collaboration among Orthodox and Christian communities, as well as engaging in interfaith dialogue to address the pressing environmental challenges we face. It is crucial to acknowledge that the impacts of the ecological crisis disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations on our planet.
In the document “For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church” by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the importance of serving our neighbor and preserving the natural environment in the face of climate change is emphasized. The Church recognizes the intimate connection between caring for creation and serving the body of Christ, as well as the link between the economic conditions of the poor and the ecological conditions of the planet. It is highlighted that those most affected by the ecological crisis are often the most vulnerable. Therefore, addressing climate change is not just an environmental issue but also a matter of social welfare and justice.
In conclusion, as we enter a new ecclesiastical year, the Ecumenical Patriarchate wishes all honorable brothers and beloved children a year filled with divine blessings and productivity. May the intercession of Panagia Pammakaristos bring upon everyone the life-giving grace and boundless mercy of the Creator. This message is delivered with fervent supplication by † Bartholomew of Constantinople on September 1, 2024.
