The Holy Church celebrates today the feast of the Holy Martyrs Florus and Laurus, twin brothers who, along with the martyr Leo, exemplified brotherly love and devotion to Christ. They were taught the Orthodox faith by their teachers Proculus and Maximus, who also became Christian Martyrs.
Florus and Laurus, skilled stone sculptors, were commissioned by the ruler Licinius in Illyricum to build a pagan temple. Instead, they used the money to help the poor and completed the temple miraculously with the assistance of Christ. Their actions led to the conversion of many, including the ruler’s family and the impoverished individuals they had aided.
Those influenced by the Holy Brothers renounced idolatry and openly professed their Christian faith, facing martyrdom at the hands of Licinius. Florus and Laurus were ultimately thrown into a well, where they received the crowns of martyrdom for their unwavering commitment to the teachings of the Gospel.
