Saint Dorotheos, born in Antioch, Syria, around 506 or 508 A.D., had a privileged upbringing and received a classical education, including medical studies. Despite his intellectual prowess, he felt called to a life of seclusion in a monastery. Seeking guidance, he corresponded with the holy men Barsanuphius and John to learn about monasticism.
Dorotheos eventually joined the monastery of Thawatha, where he struggled with pride and social interactions. Serving as an assistant to the elder John, he learned humility and communication skills. Over time, Dorotheos was entrusted with mentoring younger monks, such as Dositheos, despite his initial reservations.
After John’s passing, Dorotheos established his own monastery, where he trained many young monks in the spiritual life. His journey from a learned physician to a respected spiritual guide serves as an inspiring example of transformation and dedication to God.
