The 60th anniversary of the Greek Orthodox Community of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Coventry was celebrated with great festivity. A Great Vespers Service with a sermon was held on the eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration, followed by a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on the day of the Feast, presided over by Bishop Maximos of Melitene.
Bishop Maximos of Melitene also presided over the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 11, 2024, conveying greetings from Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain. In attendance were dignitaries such as the Lord Mayor of the City, representatives of the High Commission of Cyprus and the Greek Consulate, as well as other community leaders and local faithful.
The celebration continued with an official luncheon, where speeches were given by the President of the Community, Mr. Alex Pantelis, and the Mayor, Mr. Minaides. Bishop Maximos of Melitene delivered a speech commemorating the Community’s 60 years of service and dedication to preserving Hellenic Orthodoxy in England.
The speech highlighted the founding of the Community by Greek Cypriots in 1964, their sacrifices and commitment to establishing a spiritual home in Coventry. The speech also recognized the Community’s charitable efforts through the Philoptochos Society, which has been providing assistance to the impoverished for 60 years. Additionally, the Community’s support for the Greek School, which aims to educate young people in Greek language, culture, and Orthodox beliefs, was praised for its role in preserving and reviving Hellenism in the diaspora.
Bishop Maximos emphasized the importance of education in preserving cultural heritage and praised the Community for prioritizing the Greek School as a lighthouse of Hellenism and Orthodoxy in England. The speech concluded with a call to honor the memory of the founders and continue their legacy of faith, love, and sacrifice for future generations. The School plays a crucial role in instilling a strong sense of Greek identity and pride in young people, while also educating them about the rituals and beliefs of the Orthodox religion. This helps promote Greek Orthodoxy within the community.
The Church of the Transfiguration serves as a spiritual home for many devoted followers, offering guidance and strength on their spiritual journey. Through sacraments, prayers, and liturgical life, individuals are connected to Christ and each other.
Preserving customs and traditions is a shared responsibility of both the Church and the community. Important life events such as baptism, marriage, and funerals are celebrated within the Church, passing on the Orthodox faith and Greek customs to future generations.
As the Greek Orthodox Community of the Transfiguration in Coventry celebrates its sixty-year journey, we express gratitude for past achievements and commit to preserving our heritage. We honor our founders and benefactors by continuing their legacy with love and humility.
A heartfelt thank you to all who have contributed to the growth and success of our Community, including the priest, parish council, teachers, volunteers, and faithful members. May God bless you all, and may the memory of our founders and benefactors live on eternally. Amen.
