On August 1, 2024, Bishop Dositej of Lipjan (who is also a Military Bishop) celebrated the Holy Archbishop’s Liturgy in the Church of the Holy Apostle Mark in Belgrade, marking the feast of the Holy Despot Stefan Visoko (Lazarević), the patron of the Serbian Army.
The solemn worship service took place in the esteemed Tašmajdan temple, which, by decree of the Patriarch of Serbia, holds the status of a military church. An altar dedicated to the Holy Despot Stefan is already present, serving the spiritual needs of the Serbian Armed Forces until a dedicated temple can be constructed for the son and heir of Holy Prince Lazar Srpski. The event was attended by the Minister of Defense, Mr. Bratislav Gašić.
Bishop Dositej conveyed the blessings and greetings of the Patriarch of Serbia to the gathered faithful, particularly addressing the Christ-loving soldiers. He extended heartfelt congratulations to all members of the Serbian Armed Forces. “Today we gather to prayerfully glorify God and honor the illustrious among the Saints of God, Despot Stefan Lazarević,” Bishop Dositej preached. “Brave and invincible in battles, a wise negotiator in diplomacy, and a humble, contrite man of prayer and asceticism in his cell. The Holy Despot Stefan is the protector of our Army, who watches over us. Let us pray to him to strengthen us, that we may have the fortitude to defend ourselves in these challenging times.”
This significant celebration underscores the deep connection between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian Armed Forces, reflecting the enduring spiritual heritage and the unity of faith and national defense.
