President Joe Biden has stated that ending Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip is a top priority as he nears the end of his presidency.
He also expressed concerns about the threat to democracy posed by former President Donald Trump, linking it to antisemitism.
In a speech to the nation on Wednesday, Biden announced his decision not to seek reelection in order to unify the Democratic Party following a divisive debate performance against Trump last month.
“I revere this office, but I love my country more,” he stated. “The defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think is more important than any title.”
Biden remains committed to his agenda, focusing on foreign policy and U.S. leadership in the world as his term comes to an end in the next six months.
“I’m going to keep working to end the war in Gaza, to bring home all the hostages and to bring peace and security to the Middle East and end this war,” he affirmed.
He is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation in Gaza and progress towards a ceasefire and hostage release deal.
Additionally, Biden highlighted the threat to democracy posed by Trump, emphasizing the importance of choosing unity over division in the upcoming election.
When he first announced his campaign in 2019, Biden cited Trump’s response to the Charlottesville incident as a motivating factor for his run for presidency.
