The feast of the Synaxis of the 12 Apostles was celebrated by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
This holiday, known as the “Synaxis”, is a gathering of believers to honor the twelve Holy Apostles for their work, guided by the Holy Spirit and sent by Jesus Christ to teach the nations. The feast took place at the Holy Monastery named after the Apostles, located on the Western shore of the Sea of Tiberias in the city of Tiberias.
The Divine Liturgy was led by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem, with other clergy including Metropolitan Kyriakos of Nazareth, Archbishops Aristarchos of Constantina and Aristovoulos of Madaba, as well as Archimandrites, local Priests, and Priests from Greece and other Orthodox countries. The chanting was done in Greek by Vasilios Gotsopoulos and in Arabic by the Acre Choir, with attendees from various backgrounds.
In his sermon before Holy Communion, the Patriarch emphasized the power given to Jesus by God and His command to the Apostles to teach and baptize all nations in the name of the Holy Trinity. He highlighted the importance of the Apostles’ role in spreading the teachings of Christ and establishing the Church.
The Apostles were given the authority to ordain priests and oversee the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit. They preached the Gospel and baptized believers, establishing the foundation of the Church on the teachings of Christ. Their faith and dedication to spreading the message of Jesus laid the groundwork for the Apostolic succession of bishops in the Church.
The Church is known as “Apostolic” because it follows the teachings of the holy glorious twelve Apostles and the Most Blessed Theotokos, Mother of God. Let us join in honoring them and seeking their intercession for protection and help. After the Divine Liturgy, a festive meal was hosted by Monk Vasilios for the Patriarchal Entourage and the congregation. Amen. Many happy returns!
