The Diocese of Spain and Portugal has announced that a significant phase of the painting project at the Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Madrid has been completed. Archdeacon Nicolae Bradu Balan and his team have painted over 430 square meters of frescoes out of the total 2,000 square meters.
The progress was shared with the faithful during the Divine Liturgy at the Madrid Cathedral. Protosyncellus Macarie Bărgăvanu, the Cathedral’s Ecclesiarch, reported that the left lateral apse, the prothesis, the diaconicon, and other areas of the church have been beautifully painted.
The frescoes include depictions of the Descent from the Cross, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and various scenes from the lives of saints and prophets. The project has been funded by the Department for Romanians Abroad to preserve Romanian identity in a European context.
Partners in the project include the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Spain and Portugal, Nepsis España Association, Hope and Philanthropy Association, Saint Sebastian Children’s and Youth Center Association, and the Basilica Media Center of the Romanian Patriarchate.
