On Tuesday, Bishop Antonie of Bălți conducted a thanksgiving service to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Republic of Moldova officially recognizing the Metropolis of Bessarabia.
The service was held at the location of the future headquarters of the Diocese of Bălți, which will also house a cathedral.
Bishop Antonie reflected on the challenges that the Metropolis of Bessarabia faced from its reinstatement in 1992 until its formal recognition by the Republic of Moldova on July 30, 2002.
“Our mission is noble, and I express my gratitude to the priests who persevered through great tribulations, especially during the ten years before our recognition by the state,” Bishop Antonie shared with Trinitas TV.
The bishop recognized Metropolitan Petru of Bessarabia’s significant sacrifices and commitment to achieving official recognition for the Romanian jurisdiction by the Republic of Moldova.
“I appreciate the priests for their dedication, love, and understanding that the mission of the Metropolis of Bessarabia is honorable, beautiful, and blessed, despite facing challenges. Sometimes darkness attempts to overshadow the light, but as bearers of truth and justice, we will ultimately triumph over our difficulties,” Bishop Antonie stated.
On September 14, 1992, the Eparchial Assembly of the Metropolis of Bessarabia requested the reactivation of the Metropolis. Three months later, on December 19, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved the Eparchial Assembly’s request.
